AS/A2 Music.

Course Outline

Part I is AS and Part II is A2. Each part has an equal weighting in the full A Level. There are three units in each part and candidates must take the three AS modules (Units 1-3) and the three in A2 (Units 4-6) to gain full A Level certification. AS is set at a level of study halfway between GCSE and full A Level standard.

Key Course Features

  • A broad range of areas of study
  • Encourages the use of music technology as a compositional tool for those interested in it
  • As flexible as possible within the constraints imposed by the validating examination body
  • A refreshing look at interesting ideas of context and structure to enhance and develop musical interests and
    skills in student musicians

As AS is at a lower level of demand than A2, there is a more gradual progression from GCSE - it is hoped this will attract more post-GCSE music students.

Units Studied

Unit 1 : Understanding Music
This involves developing an aural and historical perspective of music through a study of three set works and one musical topic.
Unit 2 : Composing
A unit developing students' awareness of stylistic composition, this may include 'free' composition, writing for voices and writing for different instrumental combinations. Use will be made of music technology for those interested. Two compositions are required.
Unit 3 : Performing
Students are asked to perform a short programme of ensemble music and also to prepare a performance of a composition, the latter could be 'realised' using music technology.
Unit 4 : Understanding Music
A study of music since 1900 plus a study on one set work, both of which aim to further develop students' aural perception of style in music.
Unit 5 : Investigation, Report and Composition
A study of a comparison between two works, producing a report and a composition related to the works studied.

Unit 6:Performing
Students play a 7- 10 minutes solo programme followed by a Viva Voce, the latter enabling candidates to talk It is not a prerequisite that you have studied a GCSE Music course, but acquaintance with Grade 5 Theory and a performing standard of a pass at Grade 5 would form a useful alternative platform to enable the AS course to be successfully completed.

You will be expected to sing and play in at least one Music Department ensemble for the duration of the course. Students are encouraged to assist with one music group in the department and, if time allows, with a Key Stage 3 music class during Year 12.

Future Prospects

The status of the A Level stands high as an academic subject of quality and as such offers a good basis for application to all Music Colleges, University Music Departments and vocational courses in the performing arts

Many view music to be a vocational option, but this is by no means the case, indeed 40% of HGS A Level Music students have gone on to higher education without studying music further. The cross-curricular skills gained and enhanced by studying music stands students in good stead, not least in their link with younger students, flexibility and sense of commitment. Music is for life!
